"Activism is my rent for living on this planet." -Alice Walker (1944-), African American writer
Upcoming direct action: Secretary of State Condi Rice is coming to the Portland Convention Center Wednesday, October 19. The protest there, coordinated with Veterans for Peace and other groups, begins at 5:00pm.
Condi Rice was National Security Adviser and Secretary of State under Bush II, and was a key figure in drawing deceptive connections between Saddam Hussein and the events of 9/11. The resulting Iraq war cost, and is still costing, billions of dollars, the lives of uncounted hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and some four thousand American military, and unimaginable destruction.
If the phrase "war criminal" seems too heated, try it this way: Rice is partly responsible for a war that ranks among the most misguided, mendacious, and tragic events in American history. As a matter of objective fact, we were systematically lied to and manipulated. Rice did the lying and manipulating. Ten years later we're STILL at war.
And yet PSU is dropping an estimated $50,000 in her lap for a speaking engagement. Here in Portland. A free MAX ride away from the camp.
